NSES Report-
August 17, 2010 School Committee Meeting

I. District Strategic Plan

A. Dr. Maureen Chevrette and I have chaired objectives number one and two this new school year and work with a group of administrators and teachers in carrying out the action steps of this section of the Strategic Plan. We updated the plans for the past school year. I intend to meet with the new Curriculum Director to work on cross walking the math curriculum with the new math series Envisions.

B. The Language Arts Curriculum committee will be meeting this school year to continue our work on the curriculum.

C. Dr. Chevrette, Mrs. Jolin and I worked last year with the teachers from kindergarten through grade five on our new science curriculum and our new science kits, which were introduced in March of 2010. The teachers will be using three science kits this year and continue with the model lessons from Tony Rabaiotti from the East Bay Collaborative. We are fortunate to have the East Bay Collaborative provide continued support into the new school year for the additional kits.

II. School Improvement Plan

A. Our last meeting was held in June. We reviewed and updated the School Improvement Plan for the 2010-2011 school year. The Family Math Night held on June 3rd was a great success. We reviewed the Common Task using a RAISE Constructed Response. This practice will continue into next year to be done in January and May. Our meetings are held monthly and will be posted on the NSES website.

III. School Activities

A. Six teachers will attend a McREL training on Wednesday, August 18th at the Middle School with Dr. BJ Stone to get ready for the new school year. The teachers and administrators from all four schools who participated will be implementing strategies from the book, Classroom Instruction that Works, and training the entire faculty. We are excited about this new venture which will improve student achievement and close gaps. This has been a very positive process and the enthusiasm is spreading throughout the school.

B. NSES has been a busy place this summer. Camp Phoenix just ended last Friday, August 13th where there were some 80 children attending in a given week.

C. The Extended School Year was very successful under the leadership of Mrs. Cynthia McLellan who organized the classes and worked closely with me on locations and materials needed for the students and the teachers involved. ESY ended on Thursday, August 5th after five weeks.

D. The new group for after school day care, Kids Klub, which is a branch of Dr. Day Care, held an Ice Cream Social and an orientation at NSES on Monday evening, August 16th. We look forward to a positive and collaborative relationship with this group at NSES. I have not met the site director yet since that person has not been hired, but I am working with Mrs. Deana Cook who oversees all of the districts’ after school programs. Mrs. Cook has left flyers in the office at NSES and has contacted all families whose children previously attended the ASK program.

E. Cleaning at NSES is now complete and I am really pleased with the work that Mr. Kopacz and Mrs. Denise Dowling did in getting the school ready for opening. All of the custodians worked as a team to get the job done at each of the four schools.

F. The Kids’ Care program will continue this year at NSES and Halliwell under the direction of Mrs. Beth Sardinha. She has planned a meeting with Mr. Brown, Mrs. Jolin and I for Thursday morning, August 19th to review and evaluate last year’s program and plan accordingly for the coming year.

G. The Opening Day agenda is planned for the faculty and staff at NSES for August 31, 2010. We are ready to go for the 23rd year at NSES!
